TRANSPORT

Fellrunner busBUSES
The villages are served by the Fellrunner bus service which is operated and driven by local volunteers.  Currently there are services to Penrith on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, with a service to Carlisle on a Wednesday.  For full details of the timetable see the Fellrunner website http://www.fellrunnerbus.co.uk

TRAINS
The Settle Carlisle railway runs through Culgaith, described as one of the most scenic railways in the country. The station at Culgaith was closed in 1970 but the signal box and level crossing remain.  The nearest station is at Langwathby from where it is possible to get trains to Carlisle and Leeds and stations in between.  For timetable information see http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk

RURAL WHEELS, VILLAGE WHEELS and COMMUNITY WHEELS - Subsidised Rural Transport

Rural Wheels provides door to door transport for people in rural areas who do not have access to public transport. Customers are issued with “smartcard” that stores points to pay for your travel instead of cash. There is also a telephone number to ring to book the transport in advance. Transport is charged at 37p per mile and is available Monday to Saturday 8.30 am to 6 pm. For more information on the scheme click through here

VOLUNTARY SOCIAL CAR SCHEME
The Voluntary Car Scheme is intended for those people who have no other means of transport. Volunteers are available to collect you from your home and take you to your chosen destination for a reasonable cost. Drivers provide transport in their own cars to members of the community in their free time. Drivers are currently refunded for fuel expenses at 45p per mile.

The service can be used for a variety of purposes including:

  • Making connections with buses or trains
  • Doctor, Dentist or Optician appointments
  • Visiting friends or family in hospital
  • Shopping
  • Visiting friends
